A crippled teenage boy whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was reportedly crushed to death by an articulated vehicle while begging for alms at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Anambra State.
The sister to the cripple who was pushing the cripple in his customised wheel chair, was alleged to have escaped death by the whiskers as she abandoned the crippled brother and ran for safety as the tanker had on having a break failure, was rushing towards them.
According to investigation, the 40-foot tanker that had earlier off loaded its liquid content, was on descending the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway from Army Barracks approach, reportedly had a break failure and rammed into commuters that were waiting to board vehicles to their different destinations at Upper Iweka.
Scores of the commuters sustained various degrees of injuries while the cripple who could not ran away like others did on seeing the tanker, was crushed to death immediately.
According to a woman who said she was among those that ran away but who did not want her name in print, “God saved us from untimely death, I pity the crippled boy who has no legs to run away like the little sister.
“That girl is clever and on seeing danger, ran away with others if not, it would have been two corpses from a family.” His sibling sister, aged about six, who was pushing him for alms in his customised wheel chair, was among those that ran away on seeing the tanker approaching them.
Crying and wailing, the sister said, “my crippled brother is dead and I don’t know how to locate my parents, he was the one directing me as I was pushing him on the wheel chair to this place, now he has died”
Efforts made to contact the Onitsha Police Area Commander, Mr. John Obuagbaka to confirm the incident proved abortive as he was not on seat when our correspondent came calling but a Senior Police Officer who pleaded anonymity, said that they were aware of the incident.
