The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) is to embark on the distribution of improved tomato varieties to vegetable farmers in Kaduna State in its sustained efforts to ensure the availability of quality grade tomato fruits for processing by industries in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the State Council Co-ordinator, Mallam Suraj Lawal and made available to newsmen in Kaduna Friday said the objective of the exercise is to facilitate farmers’ access to improved seeds to boost national output from the current estimated of about 1.8 million metric tons per-annum.
The statement also informed that through the exercise, local varieties that are not high yielding can be systematically replaces and guarantee access to sustainable raw materials supply by existing and emerging tomato processing industries.
Mallam Lawal explained that the vegetable farmers in the State were selected to benefit from the project by the Council because of the suitability of the state’s ecology for the production of tomatoes all year round.
He mentioned that the symbolic distribution of the seed to farmers by the Director-General of the Council, Dr. Huassaini Ibrahim Doko will be made to the Commissioner of Agriculture, Professor Kabir Mato who will receive the seeds on behalf of the vegetable farmers in the state.
