Nigeria is Returning to the Hobbesian State Where Life is Short, Nasty – Says GIFAD

The Global Initiative for African Development (GIFAD) has decried that Nigeria is returning to the Hobbesian State of nature where life is short, brutish and nasty due to increase of Insecurity that has reached alarming level in Nigeria.

In view of this, the Initiative has resolved to organize 3 days Summit with the Theme: Nigeria Security, Peace, Unity and National Reconcilation: ” Challenge, Issues and Way Forward” with the objective to deliberate and proffer solutions on the incessant killings, kidnapping and Banditry revaging the peace and unity of the citizens of Nigeria among others.

The Chairman, Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Summit, Ambassador Johnson Adesida and other political stakeholders who stated this during a press briefing on the State of the Nation in Abuja, 26th July, 2019 laments that any breakdown of civility in Nigeria would mean a human tragedy that could be of global concern capable of destabilizing the whole of the West African Region.

He was of the opinion that the increase of insecurity have reached to the extent that most people fear that Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb and blink of annihilarious.

Ambassador Adesida added that Nigeria which was freely elected democratic government for 2 decades has recorded the worst security, instability and economic recessions in her history.

The LOC Summit Chairman pointed out that the above scenario is being exacerbated by lack of patriotism, religious intolerance, hate speech and terrorism which has internally displaced majority of citizens and disrupted local production of food, goods and services.

He also noted that religious extremists have discouraged children registration in schools in the North and thereby deepen the depth of poverty, ignorance, ilitetacy in the region and threatrening the future of the country.

Ambassador Adesida said the rise of ethnicity, bigotry, ethnic and militia is on the high speed while the seeming indifference of the ruling class to the situation has not helped matters.

“Furthermore, the seeming indifference of the ruling class to the situation has not helped matters. We appreciate the efforts of the present and previous governments in tackling the problems.

“Billions of funds have been sunk into security over the past ten years, but it seems that the more funds are expended, the more the terrorists are emboldened the more and multiple.

” Today, things have worsened and Nigerians must find answers to the multiplying questions. The tides have changed, as terrorism have degenerated into Banditry, kidnapping, robbery, sporadic shooting and killing of civilians by unidentified gunmen.

” Nigerians are really in a state of terror and people are resorting to self aid or leaving the country since the situation looks to have gotten out of police and security apparastuese control.

“We maybe returning to the Hobbesian State of nature where life is short, brutish and nasty. Any breakdown of civility in Nigeria would mean a human tragedy that could be of global concern, which is capable of destabilizing the whole of the West African Region” he read.

He opined that the initiative work essentially is on deepening democratic principles, mobilizing support for National Unity send security, promoting electoral reform and National dialogue.

“In this light, this summit is therefore very important at this point to help forestall such event. To this end, GIFAD in collaboration with other stakeholders is organizing a three-days Summit on the theme: Nigeria Security, Peacy, Unity and National Reconcilation: Challenges, Issues and Way Forward”

“The objectives of the Summit include but limited to the following:- To set up and kick start a national discourse on the dreadful security situation in Nigeria at the moment.

“To deliberate and proffer solutions on the increase killings, kidnapping and Banditry ravaging the peace and unity of the citizens of Nigeria.

“To review all the tenets of the polices proffered by government towards settling the problems of Fulani herders and farmers across the country.
