Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested the task force officer who physically dealt with a Catholic Priest, Reverend Father Mathew Orie, at the Abakaliki Rice Mill on Monday January 14, 2019.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Loveth Odah, confirmed the arrest while identifying the suspect simply as Pius.
She said the suspect would be arraigned as soon as investigation into the matter was concluded, adding that he was arrested after escaping from the crime scene.
“Investigations reveal that the suspect claimed to be a member of a task force which collects toll from rice buyers.
“The suspect allegedly insisted even after getting clarifications from the operators of the mill that the priest had actually paid.
“He was said to have hit the priest on the head, causing him to lose consciousness. Fortunately, he was said to have been resuscitated in a hospital and is presently alright”.
The Police Spokesperson assured members of the public, especially the Catholic faithful in the state that the Command would carry out a thorough investigation on the matter.
It would be recalled that Pius abounded his Motorcycle and ran away after beaten the priest to coma but police recovered the motorcycle and traced him and got him arrested on Thursday.
