Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi (New), in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, after breaching facility security and attacking personnel on duty.

According to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the incident left five officers injured, two of them in serious condition and receiving treatment at a government health facility.

A swift response led to the recapture of seven of the fleeing inmates, who are now back in custody.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, has visited the facility and ordered a full investigation into the escape, warning that any staff found complicit will face sanctions.

He also directed an immediate manhunt in collaboration with sister security agencies to track down the remaining escapees.

Members of the public have been urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and report any suspicious movements or sightings of the fugitives to the nearest security formation.

While preliminary investigations are ongoing, the NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding all custodial facilities and ensuring public safety nationwide.
