In a decisive move set to redraw key transport corridors, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate reconstruction of three major federal roads in Niger State spanning a combined 306.5 kilometres, alongside a strategic extension of the Bodo–Bonny Road to connect with the East–West Road in Rivers State.

The approvals, announced Thursday, mark one of the most significant road interventions in recent months and signal the administration’s intensified push toward durable, long-life infrastructure built with reinforced concrete pavement.

The projects slated for reconstruction in Niger State include:

Mokwa–Bida Road (120km)

Mokwa–Makeri Road (63km)

Bida–Labata Road (123.5km)

Together totaling 306.5 kilometres, the roads will be rebuilt using reinforced concrete technology, a shift aimed at delivering stronger surfaces capable of withstanding heavy traffic and extreme weather conditions.

He said the Mokwa and Bida corridors are critical arteries linking agricultural hubs and commercial centres in North-Central Nigeria, where road deterioration has long hampered trade and mobility.

Beyond Niger State, the President also approved the extension of the Bodo–Bonny Road to create a direct connection to the East–West Road, a long-awaited infrastructure link expected to boost industrial and maritime activities in Rivers State.

The project will be executed as a dual carriageway, constructed with concrete pavement and fitted with solar-powered street lighting.

It will be awarded through a competitive bidding process.

The Bodo–Bonny axis has been widely regarded as a strategic economic route, particularly for energy, logistics and coastal commerce in the South-South region.

Reacting to the development, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the approvals as strategic interventions along critical national economic corridors.

According to him, the projects will significantly enhance connectivity, stimulate trade and accelerate socio-economic development across the benefiting regions.

He urged Nigerians to recognise what he described as the administration’s sustained infrastructure drive across all six geopolitical zones, particularly in delivering high-quality roads and bridges nationwide.

The Minister congratulated the governments and people of Niger and Rivers States, as well as Nigerians who stand to benefit from the projects, calling the approvals landmark decisions.

With reinforced concrete replacing conventional asphalt and solar lighting embedded into highway design, the projects reflect a broader shift toward longevity and modernization in federal road construction.

As Nigerians welcome the announcements, attention now turns to execution timelines, contractor performance and delivery standards, the true tests that will determine whether this bold infrastructure push translates into lasting impact on ground.
