The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff-CDS, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has assured that there will no infringement of citizens rights of movement or otherwise by security agencie personnel as the Third Edition of Armed Forces and Security Agencies Half Marathon Championship Abuja 2019 kick off 15th of this month.
The CDS stated this during a press briefing with all security agencies comprises Civil Defence, Immigration, Custom, Police, Fire Service, Ministry of Sports, Road Safety among others at the Army Headquarters Abuja through the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of the Marathon Championship, Commodore Nuhu Bala on Wednesday.
General Olonisakin was of the opinion that the aim and objectives of the sports exercise is to cement the existing relationship between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and others security agencies through sports which consists 14 of them and is expected to cover a distance of 21.5 kilometers.
According to him, adequate measure have been put in place in legal and right manner to ensure that law abiding Nigerian’s right are not impede or interrupted with their daily business during the marathon championship, saying all the security agencies involved in the control of traffic are part of the sports exercise.
He maintained that it is their primary responsibility to ensure the root are properly marked by next week Thursday, pointing out that the Armed Forces and security agencies are disciplined institutions and as such are working with the international best standard practices.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria and security agencies are involved in the exercise and we are all aware and we know that those Agencies that are established by law to control the traffic are also part of the exercise and it is their primary responsibility to ensure that the roots are properly marked by Thursday.
“The public is already been sensitized on the up-coming event, we have written to FCT for the closure of the marked road especially from starting point to end point during the exercise. So adequate measure have been put in place in very legal and right manner to ensure that law abiding Nigerian’s right are not impede or interrupted with their daily business.
“Concerning the human right abuse, you know that the Armed Forces and all the security agencies are disciplined institutions, we work with the international best standard and therefore, there would not be any infringement of citizens rights of movement or otherwise.
“We operate by the best practice and we intend to keep it that way. There would never be abuse of anybody right during the exercise. We have taken all possible necessary measure established by law to ensure that everybody goes their business during the event” He stressed.
The CDS emphasized that this year’s marathon championship include the participation of veteran officers and are expected to cover a distance of 10 kilometers, saying the starting point for the regular marathoners is public servant institute a Dei-Dei along Kubuwa express way while that of the Veterans is tipper garage along the same express way.
“The 3rd Edition of the CDS Armed Forces and Security Agencies Half Marathon Championship Abuja 2019 is scheduled to take place on 15th of June 2019 at the Sports Complex of Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment.
“The 1st Edition of the Championship took place in 2017 while the 2nd Edition was in 2018. The aim and objective of the exercise is to further cement the existing relationship between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies. The championship consist of 14 security agencies and expected to cover a distance of 21.5 km” CDS said.
