The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the promotion of 471 junior staff members as part of a sweeping exercise to strengthen its workforce ahead of a busy election cycle.
The decision was taken at the Commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja on Thursday, chaired by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, where preparations for the Anambra State Governorship Election, the FCT Area Council Election, and the upcoming party primaries in Ekiti and Osun States were also reviewed.
According to a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of Information & Voter Education, the promotions were recommended by the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (APDC) and carried out in line with INEC’s conditions of service.
Of the 515 staff shortlisted, 214 were elevated to Grade Level 07, 134 to GL06, 106 to GL05, and 17 to GL04.
The promotion of junior staff marks the completion of the first phase of the exercise, with senior staff promotions now underway.
INEC described the move as part of its commitment to merit-based career progression and staff welfare, urging employees to recommit themselves to delivering credible elections.
“Staff promotion is a routine exercise. The Commission remains committed to regular, merit-based promotion and the welfare of staff,” Olumekun said.
The announcement comes as INEC faces mounting pressure to deliver transparent polls in Anambra, the FCT, and two key Southwest states, where political stakes are already running high.
