Nigeria has opened another diplomatic front in Asia, signalling plans to expand economic and political cooperation as Foreign Affairs Minister (MFA), Yusuf Maitama Tuggar congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his appointment as Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.
In a statement released Wednesday in Abuja by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, anipr, the MFA Spokesperson, the Minister framed the congratulatory message as more than routine protocol, describing it as the beginning of a renewed partnership between two influential developing nations seeking greater voice in global affairs.
He recalled that Nigeria and Bangladesh have maintained long-standing relations shaped by shared Commonwealth heritage and similar development challenges.
Both countries, the statement noted, have consistently aligned on international peace initiatives, sustainable development priorities and calls for reform of global governance institutions, a diplomatic shorthand for deeper cooperation among Global South nations.
Abuja made clear it wants practical outcomes.
The Minister said it intends to work closely with the new Bangladeshi foreign minister to strengthen collaboration in:
trade and investment
technology transfer
capacity building and skills development
He informed that these areas mirror Nigeria’s current foreign policy shift toward economic diplomacy turning bilateral ties into pipelines for jobs, innovation and industrial growth.
By welcoming Rahman and expressing confidence in his leadership, Nigeria positioned the relationship as a strategic partnership rather than ceremonial friendship.
Analysts note the move reflects a broader effort to deepen ties with fast-growing Asian economies capable of offering manufacturing expertise and technological support.
For Abuja, the message was unmistakable: beyond congratulations lies opportunity and Nigeria intends to convert diplomacy into development.
