In its bid to achieving rapid eradication of illiteracy among the populace, Kaduna State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) through the Department of Mass Literacy Adult and Non-Formal Education has organized a 2-day training workshop for facilitators, Zonal Co-ordinators and Co-ordinatiors of Non-Formal Education Centers across the 23 Local Government Areas for effective implementation of mass literacy at the grassroots.
Declaring the workshop open, the MEST Commissioner, Alhaji Jafaru Sani observed that it is challenging to discover there are still massive drop out of school of adults and even children who do not see the need to go back to school to learn how to read and write.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Kande Barde, the Commissioner mentioned that this is why the state government is doing all it can to ensure that they resuscitate mass literacy in all the local governments to reduce illiteracy in the state.
He was of the opinion that with the mass literacy issue coming up, the government wants to believe it would go a long way to help many adult illiterate to solve their problem of lack of reading and writing.
In her welcome address, the Director, Department of Mass Literacy Adult and Non-Formal Education Kaduna State, Mrs. Justina Yahaya during the Symbolic Presentation of Learning Materials of Adult Learners said the aim of the workshop is to help effective implementation of mass literacy programmes at the grassroots.
She appealed to the 105 participants from Zango Kartaf, Zaria, Kaduna North and Kaduna South to take the workshop serious to be able to achieve the aims as well as commending the State Government under that leadership of the State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai for implementing educational programmes at all levels aimed at revamping and eradicating illiteracy.
“I will not stop this welcome address without observing and appreciating the effort of the state government under the leadership of the State Governor, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai for implementing educational programmes at all levels of education aimed at revamping and eradicating illiteracy in the state.
“I will conclude by thanking all of you for coming and to the participant, to re-emphasized the importance of the training and urged you to take it seriously” she said.
Contributing, the Chairperson, Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC) Chapter of Nigerian Union of Journalists, Kaduna Council and Anchor of the occasion, Hajiya Farida Abubakar informed that the present administration has accorded high priority to education sector and urged the participants to endeavor to acquit themselves with the necessary learning opportunities to be able to step the training down to the people at the grassroots.
While the representative of the State Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Douglas Haruna Mallan mentioned that “this is the 1st time the Ministry is partnering with Mass Literacy Department to organize the workshop and l am happy to represent my Commissioner.
“I want to appeal to you to be attentive and listen to whatever you are being taught during the training” he urges.
The Commissioner however stressed that the workshop is to bring total transformation to illiteracy to the state, adding that a very high delegate has been set up to study and come out with recommendations that would improve on mass literacy education to reduce illiteracy among the adults in the state.
