The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Nigerian Air Force (NAF), has moved decisively to fortify the backbone of Nigeria’s air operations, launching a sweeping review of logistics readiness, strengthening security collaboration with Lagos State and commissioning new welfare infrastructure for personnel.

The CAS began a three-day operational visit to the NAF Logistics Command, Lagos, on February 2, placing personnel, equipment and critical support facilities under close scrutiny as the Air Force intensifies counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across the country.

At the heart of the visit was a clear message: modern warfare is won or lost on logistics.

The Air Force chief stressed that sustained airpower projection depends not only on aircraft and pilots, but on a resilient supply chain, efficient maintenance systems and a motivated workforce capable of supporting nationwide missions without disruption.

“Operational success is inseparable from logistics strength,” the CAS said, noting that the tempo, reach and effectiveness of NAF air operations are sustained by a robust logistics architecture working behind the scenes.

During the visit, the CAS paid a courtesy call on Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, reaffirming the strategic importance of Lagos to the Nigerian Air Force.

Describing the state as a central nerve of NAF operations, he noted that Lagos hosts Logistics Command and several critical NAF establishments that support air operations nationwide.

“Lagos remains central to our capacity to project airpower across Nigeria. The efficiency of our operations is closely linked to the stability, cooperation and support we enjoy here,” he said.

The CAS commended the Lagos State Government for sustained investments in infrastructure and security, stressing that a secure Lagos is vital not only to national defence but to Nigeria’s economic stability.

Responding, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the Armed Forces, describing security as the foundation of economic growth and social stability.

“Lagos will continue to work hand in hand with the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to protect our people and safeguard the strategic importance of this state to the nation,” the governor said.

Both sides acknowledged the growing synergy between the NAF and Lagos State, particularly under Operation MESA, where air surveillance and intelligence capabilities complement ground operations by sister services and other security agencies.

Welfare Takes Centre Stage
The visit also witnessed the commissioning of major welfare and infrastructure projects at 055 NAF Camp, Legico Barracks, underscoring the Air Force’s renewed emphasis on personnel wellbeing as a force multiplier.

The CAS declared that welfare is no longer a peripheral concern but a strategic pillar of operational readiness.

“A highly motivated force is the foundation of mission success. These projects reflect our command philosophy to sustain a professional, mission-ready Air Force capable of delivering decisive effects,” he said.

The newly commissioned facilities include:

Two blocks of 24 two-bedroom flats

One block of 40 one-bedroom flats

A purpose-built sports complex designed to enhance fitness and wellbeing

The CAS described the facilities as a significant upgrade from traditional barracks standards, noting that Legico Barracks located in a prime Lagos residential area now ranks among the most dignified service accommodations nationwide.

“Adequate housing stabilises the home front and allows personnel to focus fully on operational duties,” he said.

He commended his predecessor, Air Marshal HB Abubakar (rtd), for initiating the project, while urging beneficiaries to maintain discipline, professionalism and a strong sense of ownership.

The Air Force chief expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the National Assembly for sustained funding support, thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for what he described as unwavering backing of the Nigerian Air Force.

He charged officers, airmen and airwomen to remain disciplined ambassadors of the Service and to sustain cordial relations with host communities and sister security agencies.

As the visit drew to a close, the message from the Air Force leadership was unmistakable: logistics readiness, personnel welfare and intergovernmental cooperation are now being deliberately fused into a single operational force multiplier.

With threats evolving and operational demands rising, the Nigerian Air Force signalled its resolve to remain agile, resilient and fully mission-ready in defence of Nigeria’s national security.
