The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has emphasized the importance of women’s representation in politics, stating that their underrepresentation is a missed opportunity for national progress.

He acknowledged the crucial role women play in leadership and governance, describing them as “better managers” and strong decision-makers.

During an advocacy visit by women activists under the “Reserved Seats for Women Bill,” Akpabio lamented the challenges women face in political spaces, noting that women often don’t vote for female candidates.

He urged the advocates to do more to win converts for the bill.

The bill’s proponents, led by Mrs. Osasu Igbinedion, argued that women’s representation in parliament is crucial for stronger communities, inclusive legislation, and better outcomes in health, education, and peace-building.

They emphasized that the bill is not about reducing men’s space but about correcting systemic exclusion and expanding possibilities for Nigeria.

The advocates called on the Senate to endorse the bill, saying it would send a powerful message about the Senate’s commitment to leadership with integrity, legislation with empathy, and bold action towards equality.
