In a move aimed at tightening leadership control and accelerating Nigeria’s road safety reforms, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has approved the appointment of two senior officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as Deputy Corps Marshals, reinforcing command oversight in two strategically sensitive regions.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, elevate Assistant Corps Marshals Hyginus Omeje and Mark Sabiya to the rank of Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM), with responsibility for the South-East and North-East geopolitical zones respectively.
According to the SGF, the decision was driven by the need to deepen leadership capacity and deploy proven, performance-driven officers to zones where traffic management, safety enforcement and institutional coordination remain critical.
Omeje, who currently heads the Operations Department at the FRSC National Headquarters, brings decades of frontline operational expertise to the South-East, a region marked by dense traffic corridors and rising commercial mobility.
Sabiya, until now in charge of the Department of Finance and Accounts, is expected to apply his administrative and fiscal management strength to the North-East, where road safety operations intersect with reconstruction, humanitarian movement and post-conflict recovery.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC described the appointments as “timely and well-considered,” noting that they come at a critical juncture in Nigeria’s road safety journey.
He said the elevation of the two officers reinforces the Corps’ leadership architecture and strengthens its capacity to deliver targeted, data-driven safety interventions across the country.
“These officers have distinguished themselves through years of exemplary service, operational excellence and commitment to the ideals of the Corps,” the Corps Marshal said. “Their experience will significantly enhance command effectiveness, stakeholder engagement and service delivery.”
The Corps Marshal further charged the newly appointed Deputy Corps Marshals to translate their experience into measurable outcomes, particularly in addressing persistent traffic challenges, reducing road crashes and improving compliance with safety regulations.
With road safety increasingly viewed as both a public health and economic issue, the leadership reshuffle signals the Federal Government’s intent to professionalise enforcement, sharpen accountability and deliver safer highways for Nigerians.
For the FRSC, the message is clear: seasoned leadership is being deliberately positioned where impact matters most.
