The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, on Wednesday commissioned a string of new infrastructure projects at the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Joe Akaahan Cantonment, Makurdi, in what he described as a firm step toward improving the welfare of soldiers and their families.

Speaking at the inauguration, Oluyede said the new facilities would not only boost morale but also enhance the operational readiness of troops stationed in the cantonment.

Among the commissioned projects were the remodelled Joint Officers’ Mess, Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess, the Jumpers’ Club, a newly built Regimental Sergeant Major’s residence, and modern transit accommodation for personnel.

“These projects are more than buildings; they represent our commitment to the welfare of our men and women in uniform. A motivated force is an effective force, and these facilities will contribute significantly to both operational efficiency and quality of life,” the Army Chief declared.

Oluyede urged officers and soldiers to put the facilities to good use and maintain them for long-term benefit.

The Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Hyacinth Alia, was represented at the ceremony by his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode.

The event drew senior military commanders, members of the Benue State Executive Council, and heads of security agencies, underscoring its significance.

Highlights of the day included the symbolic planting of commemorative trees by the COAS and the deputy governor, a gesture symbolizing growth and continuity within the Nigerian Army.

With these latest upgrades, the Army leadership is signaling a renewed focus on soldier welfare and infrastructure, reinforcing its broader push for a stronger, more responsive force.
