The Nigerian Army has debunked as false, baseless, and malicious an online report claiming that bandits overran its troops and carted away heavy weapons in Obanla, Kwara State, describing the publication as a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians and demoralize gallant soldiers.
In a strongly worded statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division, the Army said at no time were any of its positions overrun or weapons stolen, dismissing the report as “a fabrication fueled by mischief and falsehood.”
“The publication is not only untrue but designed to undermine the morale of our troops who are recording significant operational successes across Kwara and Kogi States,” the statement read.
According to the Army, troops of 148 Battalion (Rear), currently engaged in clearance operations across Kogi and Kwara States, recently mounted a strategic blocking position along the Kwara–Ekiti border, where they neutralized two armed bandits and recovered two brand-new AK-47 rifles.
The military reiterated that no General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), no ammunition, and no operational base were lost, contrary to the viral online publication alleging the theft of six GPMGs and over 30,000 rounds of ammunition.
The statement condemned the false report as “irresponsible journalism,” warning purveyors of fake news to desist from peddling narratives capable of jeopardizing national security operations.
“We urge the public to disregard this falsehood and continue to support our troops with timely and credible information,” Lt. Col. Okoye added.
“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to neutralizing all criminal elements and restoring lasting peace across Kogi, Kwara, and adjoining states.”
The Army reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to sustain offensive operations until every criminal network operating in the North Central corridor is dismantled.
