January 15 is no longer just a day of mourning, It is a day of balance of salutes and silence, of celebration and sacrifice.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has formally clarified that the annual national military observance should be known as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, marking a deliberate shift from the long-used title, Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The change, officials say, is not cosmetic. It is a reframing of national memory.

Every year, January 15 is set aside by the Federal Government to honour serving men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces, while also paying solemn tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the country’s territorial integrity and the lives and property of its citizens.

The day is the climax of a week-long series of military and civic activities across the country lectures, prayers, outreach programmes, and symbolic engagements ending with the traditional parade and wreath-laying ceremony on January 15.

For decades, public focus has rested almost entirely on remembrance. But defence authorities say that emphasis no longer captures the full spirit of the occasion.

The revised name Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is intended to recognise two realities at once: the heroism of the fallen and the courage, discipline, and service of those still in uniform.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the adjustment better reflects the lived experience of today’s military, one fighting active battles, sustaining casualties, and maintaining national stability in real time.

It is a reminder that while the nation remembers its heroes of the past, it must also acknowledge those standing guard in the present.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces appealed directly to Nigeria’s media organisations to adopt the updated name in all future reporting and commentary.

The appeal underscores the military’s view of the media as a strategic partner one whose language shapes public perception, morale, and national understanding of military service.

The AFN also expressed appreciation for what it described as the media’s consistent support in the fight against insecurity, signalling a desire for deeper collaboration as Nigeria navigates complex security challenges.

Redefining national honour
As bugles sound and wreaths are laid this January, the message from Defence Headquarters is clear: the nation’s gratitude is not limited to memory alone.

January 15 is now officially a day to celebrate resilience, professionalism, and service, while never forgetting the price already paid.

In renaming the day, Nigeria is not rewriting history. It is broadening it.
