Breast Cancer: Women 4 Women sensitize destitute, PWD’s, encourages cancer survivors

The Founder of a Non-Governmental Organization ‘Women 4 Women’ Hajiya Maryam Abubakar has called on the Federal, State and other sister organizations to carry breast cancer sensitization to destitute homes, People Living with Disabilities (PWD’s) to educate them on cancer sign, symptoms and preventive ways.

Hajiya Maryam made the call in an interview with newsmen when she took the breast cancer campaign to the home of the destitute in Kano road, including secondary schools, higher institutes and to encourage breast cancer survivors across Kaduna State, North-West, Nigeria on the 25th of October, 2018.

According to her, Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, and the second main cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer, pointing out that the awareness of the symptoms and the need for screening are important ways of reducing the risk among women.

She opined that the reason she took the campaign to these areas is because majority of destitute women are not aware of what breast cancer is all about, saying there is the need for them to know that Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women world-wide.

“I mobilizes medical Doctors, nurses and other health volunteer to home of persons with disability to sensitizes, encourage breast cancer survivors and to  educate women with  disability  about  the cancer, sign and symptoms and preventives ways.

“We came to meet with breast cancer survivors, and to meet with other women in the house to give them medical advice. We also came to meet with women who are street beggars, blind women and other once in the house to sensitizes them about preventive ways.

“The treatment of the cancer depends on the type of breast cancer, the stage of the cancer, sensitivity to hormone, the patient’s age, overall health and preferences. Preventives ways include avoiding excess alcohol consumption, getting enough exercise.

 “The women 4 Women is planning on taking her campaign to secondary schools and other higher institutes across the states and all the team that toke part of the campaign are dress in a Pink Shirt and Ribbon which symbolizes breast cancer awareness” Hajiya Maryam stressed.

The Founder therefore solicited for all and sundry to join hands to raise more awareness to the category of women in view of the health challenges they faces due to their nature.

Meanwhile, one of the participant at the breast cancer screening and awareness, Hajiya Maryam Musa lamented that no one has ever comes to the destitute house to talk to them about breast Cancer, symptoms and preventive ways.

She said there are many destitute women in the house that are having Breast cancer diseases and are afraid to talk due to lack of awareness of what causes the diseases.

Hajiya Maryam expressed their gesture and satisfaction for the chance given to them by Women 4 Women Organization for sensitizing them on the sign and symptoms of the breast cancer and

Also the Leader of Kaduna State Association of Persons with Disability, Mallam Samaila Abdullahi expressed grateful for the lectures and hoped that one day ministry of health will remember them.

He called on other NGOs, CSOs, UNICEF and other humanitarian organization to always remembered person with disability in every thing they do.
