In a strong international show of confidence in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign, senior military envoys from Britain and Germany stormed the North-East theatre of war on Wednesday, pledging deeper operational backing for frontline troops battling terrorists.
The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany Brigadier Tom Harper and Colonel Boris Bovecamp landed at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, where they reaffirmed sustained foreign support for Nigeria’s anti-terror operations.
Their visit marks one of the most direct diplomatic-military engagements inside the theatre command in recent months.
Addressing commanders and officers, Brigadier Harper declared that the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom goes beyond diplomacy describing it as a security partnership anchored on democracy, rule of law and human rights.
He praised Nigerian troops for sustained offensives against insurgents in the North-East and announced continued capacity-building support.
According to him, the United Kingdom will deepen training programmes through the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT).
The British envoy commended the Armed Forces for resilience in confronting terrorism and pledged further assistance to enhance professionalism and operational effectiveness.
Germany’s Defence Attaché, Colonel Bovecamp, also declared Berlin’s readiness to widen collaboration with Nigeria’s military.
He said his mission to the theatre was to identify fresh intervention areas especially capacity building and regional security cooperation — to strengthen operational outcomes.
The German officer stressed that defeating terrorism requires multinational coordination and sustained partnerships.
Receiving the delegation, Theatre Commander Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar described the foreign support as critical to battlefield successes.
He said international training initiatives have significantly sharpened troops’ response to evolving threats across the theatre.
The Commander highlighted future cooperation areas to include:
technical expertise
logistics reinforcement
equipment support
specialised operational training
According to him, the partnership is mutually beneficial and essential to sustaining momentum against insurgents.
The high-level visit ended with the signing of the visitors’ register, presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph, a ceremonial close to what military sources described as a strategic reassurance mission.
Security analysts say the presence of European defence representatives inside the operational headquarters sends a clear message: Nigeria’s counter-terror war is no longer a lone fight but a coordinated international effort.
For troops on the Frontline, the message from the Maiduguri was unmistakable, the global community is watching, and backing, the push to end insurgency.
