The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, on Tuesday charged troops in Ogoja, Cross River State, to remain unflinching in their defence of the nation, even as he rolled out fresh welfare measures to lift morale and sharpen combat readiness.
Visiting the 130 Battalion and 341 Artillery Regiment at Godwin Ally Barracks, Oluyede praised soldiers for their resilience in the face of daunting security challenges, describing their sacrifices as the backbone of Nigeria’s stability.
“You are the pride of the nation. Your resilience and sacrifices keep Nigeria safe. I urge you to give even more in service to the country,” the Army chief declared.
During the operational tour part of his wider assessment of formations under the 82 Division Oluyede inspected facilities, interacted directly with soldiers, and announced immediate upgrades to barracks schools and dilapidated accommodation.
He stressed his commitment to ensuring that soldiers’ families enjoy quality education and better living conditions.
Under his “Soldiers First” mantra, Oluyede reaffirmed ongoing reforms, including:
Renovation of living quarters for personnel and families.
Provision of new uniforms and kits for all troops.
Increased Ration Cash Allowance to guarantee improved feeding.
“These measures are not privileges, but rights you have earned. I expect that with improved welfare, you will give your utmost in discipline, professionalism, and dedication,” he told the troops.
The Army chief further called for stronger collaboration with other security agencies and host communities, noting that synergy was critical for lasting peace and stability in Cross River and beyond.
Oluyede’s visit underscored a dual message: recognition of the soldiers’ sacrifices and a pledge to back them with the resources, welfare, and leadership needed to confront evolving threats head-on.
