Senator Okorie Anthony Ani, representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District, has asserted that the June 12 democratic experience has been institutionalized, and democracy has become a stable part of Nigeria’s governance system.
Speaking to newsmen at the National Assembly in Abuja on June 12, 2025, the Lawmaker praised President Tinubu’s decision to posthumously award the late Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for his role in championing democracy in Nigeria.
Senator Ani highlighted Nwosu’s courage and integrity in confronting the military government to ensure the 1993 presidential election was held, despite attempts to stop it.
He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that even former military President Ibrahim Babangida has acknowledged that MKO Abiola won the 1993 election.
The Lawmaker affirmed that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria, having been uninterrupted for 26 years.
Senator Ani emphasized that democracy is for everyone and that a country with a democratic system of government prioritizes its citizens.
