The Mother to the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi State, Senator Emmanuel Uzor Onwe, Elder Mrs. Josephine Nwoba Nwachukwu, of Agubata village Ndegu Echera Ikwo Local Government Area has passed on at the age of 73.

Mrs. Nwachukwu’s death was confirmed by the Commissioner, through an SMS to his friends and family which reads “with a very heavy heart indeed, I confirm the death of my mother, Elder Mrs. Josephine Nwoba Nwachukwu” Onwe said.

Ebonyi State Deputy, Governor Barr Kelechi Igwe has led a team of State Executive Council to Onwe’s house, others who paid a condolence visit to the Senator include members of media practitioners from Ikwo Local Government Area led by Comrade Israel Mbam and members of Correspondent Chapel.

Addressing members of the Correspondent Chapel of the State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who visited him in his Abakaliki residence, Senator Onwe described his mother as a hardworking woman who paid a price to raise him and his siblings after the death of their father.

The Commissioner chronicled how the father was killed after the Biafra War (Ndu Buff).

Onwe said “really my mother paid a terrible price to raise her children. My mother lost her husband when she was relatively young and her husband was assassinated immediately after the war.

“My grandfather, who was a Warrant Chief in the colonial period, felt that his first daughter could not remain without being married, it was a taboo living without a husband and it was not something the culture permitted.

“So, they tortured her, tormented her, flayed her but she was adamant that she doesn’t want to take her children into another man’s home where they will be subjected to servitude and slavery that no matter the price she was going to pay, she was going to remain and look after her children and that is the price she paid.

“When I was growing up, I always remember that the greatest weapon she always had against me was each time I misbehave or try to derail, she will simply open her back and show me the scars of the weeping that compelled her to stay to look after her children and that will keep me on the straight and narrow because I knew that such sacrifice was an extra-ordinary one for one to go through for the sake of her children and she did this single-handedly throughout” He stressed.
