In a rare convergence of defence policy and education advocacy, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has positioned education as the country’s most potent tool for nation-building, declaring it the foundation upon which security, unity and sustainable development must rest.

Musa made the assertion on Wednesday at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), an engagement that culminated in the Minister receiving an Award of Excellence for what the association described as visionary and stabilising leadership.

Speaking with the authority of both a former military chief and a sitting cabinet minister, Musa argued that no amount of firepower can compensate for a poorly educated citizenry.

“Education is the bedrock of national development,” he said. “It goes beyond the classroom. It is about shaping character, instilling discipline and producing responsible citizens who can hold the nation together.”

In a pointed message to parents and educators, the Defence Minister described them as the “twin pillars” of a child’s development, insisting that the home and the classroom jointly determine a child’s values, future choices and contribution to society.

He urged parents to take greater responsibility for the moral upbringing of their children, warning that security challenges often have roots in broken value systems and weak social guidance.

According to him, strong parental involvement and active teacher engagement are as critical to national security as any military strategy.

Musa also highlighted the role of Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) within the School-Based Management Committee framework, noting that PTAs have consistently proven to be key drivers of accountability, school governance and educational outcomes.

He said government investments in education can only deliver results when parents and communities are fully engaged.

The visit by NAPTAN was as much a show of support as it was a statement of confidence.

Leading the delegation, the association’s National President, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating what he described as an enabling environment for the Defence Minister to perform.

Danjuma framed Musa’s appointment as “divine,” saying it came at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history when security challenges require not only military solutions but strong institutions and enlightened leadership.

“The Excellence Award is a recognition of his strategic leadership, institutional reforms and unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” Danjuma said.

He added that under Musa’s leadership, the Ministry of Defence has advanced policies that align national security with long-term development goals.

The ceremony’s high point was the formal presentation of the Award of Excellence to the Defence Minister, symbolising what NAPTAN described as a shared commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s future through education, discipline and patriotism.

In his closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwah, congratulated Musa on the honour, commending his “tireless efforts” to ensure peace and protect future generations.

He also applauded NAPTAN for its partnership with the ministry, noting that instilling civic responsibility, discipline and national values among young Nigerians is central to building a safer and more united country.

As Nigeria grapples with complex security and social challenges, the message from the Defence Ministry was clear: the battle for national stability will be won not only on the Frontline, but in homes and classrooms across the country.
