Nigeria’s infrastructure reset gathered pace in the North-East on Wednesday as the Federal Ministry of Works commissioned a series of emergency interventions on the Bauchi–Gombe–Billiri–Cham corridor, a strategic arterial route once pushed to the brink of collapse.
The projects, delivered under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, form part of 260 Emergency/Special Intervention Projects initiated in May 2023 to salvage critically damaged federal highways nationwide.
When the current administration assumed office, it inherited 2,064 ongoing road projects alongside a debt overhang exceeding ₦13 trillion, according to ministry officials.
With limited fiscal space, authorities prioritised routes deemed structurally distressed or economically critical roads whose failures had begun to choke trade flows and raise accident risks.
The Bauchi–Gombe axis, a vital corridor linking Bauchi, Gombe and Adamawa States, was among those flagged for urgent attention.
Emergency works on the alignment were executed in two components: overlay of the carriageway and reinstatement of failed shoulders, supported by drainage improvements to curb water-induced deterioration.
Before intervention, large sections of the highway had deteriorated severely, constraining socioeconomic activity and exposing motorists to heightened safety risks.
Engr. Mohammed Jahun, Federal Controller of Works in Gombe State, confirmed that the project has now restored motorability and significantly improved riding quality.
“The safety and durability of the route have been restored. Traffic flow has improved considerably,” Jahun said.
Reinstated shoulders now provide safe pull-off areas for motorists, reducing obstruction on the main carriageway and lowering accident exposure.
Also commissioned was the reinstatement of failed shoulders along the Gombe Bypass, a 1.5-kilometre stretch complemented by 910 metres of drainage infrastructure.
The contract was completed within three months.
Local stakeholders described the intervention as long overdue relief.
Comrade Faruk Mu’azu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Chapter, who represented the Minister at the commissioning, said the rehabilitation has transformed daily mobility.
“If you recall vividly, this road was not motorable. Now movement is free and without hitches,” he said.
Attention also turned to the Gombe–Billiri–Cham Road linking Gombe and Adamawa States, where three structurally compromised bridges were rehabilitated under the emergency programme.
The scope of work included restoration of damaged handrails, rehabilitation of abutments, stone pitching, reconstruction of wing walls and reinforcement of structural components to improve stability and visibility particularly critical for night travel.
The Federal Controller said the works have eliminated prior hazards and reinforced structural integrity along the corridor.
Beyond immediate repairs, the Bauchi–Gombe stretch forms part of the approved 4th Renewed Hope Legacy Road Project for dualisation from Akwanga through Jos to Bauchi and terminating in Gombe.
The broader legacy programme includes flagship projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, and the Calabar–Abuja Highway, all designed using continuous reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) technology, with integrated street lighting and rail components to strengthen inter-zonal connectivity.
For transporters and traders, the restored corridor signals renewed economic oxygen for North-Central and North-East supply chains.
For the Federal Government, it represents a visible attempt to reconcile inherited fiscal strain with infrastructure revival prioritising roads where failure had already begun to erode productivity.
As Nigeria grapples with tight revenues and rising capital demands, the Bauchi–Gombe intervention underscores a broader policy choice: stabilise collapsing assets first, then scale toward legacy expansion.
On this corridor at least, mobility has been restored and with it, a measure of economic momentum.
