Determined to keep Nigeria’s military ahead of fast-evolving security threats, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, to realign its training curriculum with the country’s changing operational realities, declaring that tomorrow’s wars demand smarter, joint-minded and future-ready commanders today.

Shaibu gave the charge on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, while receiving the Commandant of AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Alfred Olugbenga Shogbanmu, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, in what military sources described as a critical strategic engagement on the future of Nigeria’s defence leadership.

The Army Chief made it clear that Nigeria’s increasingly complex, fluid and multi-dimensional security environment can no longer be met with static doctrines or outdated training models.

According to him, the proliferation of asymmetric threats, regional instability and emerging security flashpoints has made adaptive professional military education not just desirable, but essential.

Shaibu cited the recent decision to establish a new Western Theatre Command as a direct response to emerging threats, stressing that such structural adjustments must be matched with training that mirrors real battlefield conditions and joint operational demands.

“Our institutions must anticipate the future, not react to it,” the COAS warned, urging AFCSC to ensure its programmes continuously reflect operational realities and enhance joint planning, coordination and execution across the Armed Forces.

The COAS commended AFCSC for its long-standing role in producing highly competent staff and command officers, describing the College as a strategic engine whose graduates shape decision-making, command efficiency and battlefield outcomes nationwide.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to the College, pledging sustained support in infrastructure development, training capacity enhancement and institutional growth.

According to him, the quality of officers emerging from Jaji directly influences command, control and inter-service synergy, making the institution central to Nigeria’s national security architecture.

Responding, Air Vice Marshal Shogbanmu expressed deep appreciation for the Army’s consistent backing, particularly the establishment of a modern simulation centre and the rehabilitation of key facilities, which he said have significantly improved learning conditions and training outcomes.

He assured the COAS that AFCSC remains committed to continual refinement of its academic and professional programmes, ensuring they stay aligned with contemporary security challenges.

The Commandant also pledged to further strengthen inter-agency and inter-service cooperation, stressing that modern security threats demand seamless collaboration across military and security institutions.

The high-level meeting sent a clear signal across the Armed Forces: professional military education is now a frontline weapon in Nigeria’s security fight.

As the nation confronts shifting threats at home and across its borders, the Army leadership insists that only officers trained to think jointly, plan strategically and act decisively can guarantee operational success.

With the COAS pushing reforms and AFCSC pledging compliance, the battle for Nigeria’s security, it appears, is being fought not only on the frontlines but in the classrooms of Jaji.
