The Senate has passed the second reading of a bill sponsored by Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje to establish the Federal University of Science in Deba, Gombe State.

Leading the debate on the bill, Senator Goje, a former Governor of Gombe State, informed that the proposed university aimed to drive modern scientific innovations and provide the necessary knowledge and expertise for Nigeria’s development.

Senator Goje emphasized the university’s importance to the socio-economic development of Gombe State, the North East geopolitical zone, and the country at large.

According to him, the university’s objectives include demonstrating scientific knowledge, skills, attitude, and experience, with a global mindset that uses critical thinking and problem-solving approaches.

Senator Goje stressed that Nigeria needs more universities, especially specialized ones, to compete with developed nations economically, scientifically, and technologically.

Contributing to the bill, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi) threw his weight behind the establishment of the university, saying it would produce the needed manpower for the country’s development and benefit not only Gombe State but also the entire North East geopolitical zone.

Also speaking, Senator Barau Jibrin, described the bill as people-oriented and urged other senators to support it.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, chaired by Senator Muntari Dandutse, for further legislative actions.
