In a bold step toward climate action and education reform, the Ministry of Defence has officially integrated environmental sustainability into the curriculum of all Armed Forces Primary and Secondary Schools across Nigeria.

The policy was unveiled during the flag-off ceremony of the National Green School Program, held at Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Kuje, Abuja.

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda by the Director of Education, Mr. Marcus Kura, Ambassador Aduda emphasized that the Ministry is committed to raising a generation of environmentally conscious citizens through hands-on, project-based learning.

“This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national climate goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Armed Forces schools must become models of sustainability, equipping students with the tools and mindset to safeguard our environment,” he stated.

“A Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework has also been established to assess the program’s implementation, impact, and progress across the school network.

According to the Ministry, the framework will ensure accountability and help drive continuous improvement.

The initiative is being delivered in partnership with the National Green School Program, which aims to embed environmental education into Nigeria’s school system.

Students will participate in activities such as tree planting, recycling projects, environmental clean-ups, and sustainability-focused school clubs.

Commandant of Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Commander J.O. Ibiang, welcomed the initiative as a timely call to action.

“This program is not just a ceremonial launch—it’s a cultural shift that instills environmental responsibility in our students,” he said, while expressing appreciation to the Permanent Secretary for his support.

The event was attended by top officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff (represented by Director of Education at Defence Headquarters, COMD Adetunji), senior personnel from the Ministry of Defence, military education officers, representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Education, school leaders, teachers, and students.

The ceremony featured a tree planting exercise, an exhibition of student-led recycling innovations, and a collective pledge from participating schools to promote green values and practices.
