Gwauro Community Builds Own Hospital to Reduce Maternal Mortality

 Resident of Gwauro Community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna has constructed a 7 bedroom hospital due to increase death of pregnant women as a result of maternal mortality.

Speaking to Reportcircle when visited the village in Kaduna, North-West, Nigeria, the Traditional title holder in the community, Mallam Umaru Galadima said the aims of building their own hospital is to fight maternal mortality and reduce the large number of pregnant  women usually died alone the road before reaching town for delivery.

According to Mallam Galadima, the Community lost so many pregnant women and children as a result of the distance between their villages to near-by town, adding that they have to spend about 25-30 kilometer from the village to locate any hospital in town for any medical attention.

The traditional titleholder informed that Gwauro whose population is about 5,000 and mostly farmers have finished building the hospital but their greatest challenges are money to complete the roofing of the hospital.

“We are tired of seeing our women, sisters and mother dying due to lack of hospital, that is why the entire community gathered themselves to build the hospital to support government and non-governmental organization in the fight against maternal and infant mortality death our area”.

“The population of the resident of the area is about 5,000 and are mostly farmers and has been in the area for many years, the politician usually visit the village during their political campaign and always promises helping them to provide all the basic amenities that could improve ourselves lives, but once they have the power, they forget them” he said.

He maintained that lack of road is one of the major problems that cause the death of pregnant women in the village most especially when they start labour before given birth at night.

Mallam Galadima also noted that inadequate health infrastructures, low level of education and inadequate community health services are some of the challenges comporting the development of the community.

“Whenever pregnant women want to deliver in the villages, it becomes a burden to the entire community, simply because there is no hospital or any facility in the area, while some have decided on their own to be using traditional mid-wives to be the only alternative” he said.

Therefore, the community leaders in the area appealed to Government and wealthy individual to help them in completing the roofing of the hospital.

Contributing, a Committee member for the construction of the hospital, Mallam Saidu Shehu Rohugi said “we have done what we could to build the hospital but our greatest challenge now is the little money to complete the hospital.

“That is why we are begging State Governor to come to our rescue, our women and children from dying while rushing to hospital in town.

Mallam Saidu emphasized that, the community cannot estimate the number of women and children that died as a result of following the bad road while trying to take patient to a near-by hospital for medical attention.

Commenting, Malama Rakiya Ahmed, who is a pregnant women residing in the area told journalist that she is always afraid of having pregnancy due to lack of hospital in their community, and it becomes a challenges for a pregnant women to be using Motor-cycle or climbing Truck-Tipper to go to hospital.

Malama Rakiya concluded by saying that, “If Kaduna State Government will help them complete the roofing of the newly constructed hospital and provide staff, there will be a serious reduction of pregnant women that are dying as a result of lack hospital” she stressed.
