The notorious Timbuktu Triangle, long feared as an impenetrable terror enclave, has been violently breached.
In a stunning battlefield breakthrough, troops of the Joint Task Force North East under Operation HADIN KAI have uncovered and obliterated secret Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) detention facilities buried deep inside the forested heart of Gujba Local Government Area, delivering one of the most devastating blows yet to the terror group’s internal machinery.
The daring operation, carried out over the last two weeks under Operation DESERT SANITY V, pushed Nigerian troops into zones once considered untouchable areas where civilians vanished without trace and terrorists ruled unchecked.
Military sources confirmed that between 21 January 2026 and now, troops overran three major terrorist detention camps hidden within the Timbuktu Triangle, a vast forest corridor spanning parts of Borno and Yobe states.
Preliminary intelligence revealed the camps were capable of holding up to 300 captives, making them a critical pillar of ISWAP’s coercion, ransom and punishment system.
Sustained ground assaults, backed by precision intelligence, forced the terrorists into chaotic retreat.
In the process, over 70 captives escaped, fleeing into nearby communities including Goniri, Buratai and Mandaragirau, where their stories began to surface.
One of the escapees, Malam Jidda Ba Jidda, abducted from Kufi village near Buratai in Biu LGA on 22 December 2025, recounted how his life was saved by the advancing troops.
According to him, confusion erupted when soldiers engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
“When the shooting started, the guards ran. We ran too. That was how God saved us,” he disclosed.
TERROR LEADERS FALL
The encounters were costly for ISWAP.
Military assessments confirm that no fewer than 32 terrorists were neutralised, including two Qaids and three Munzirs, senior commanders responsible for enforcement and detention operations. Several others were wounded and fled deeper into the forest.
After painstaking clearance operations, troops demolished all three detention facilities, ensuring they can never again be used as prisons or torture centres.
Security analysts say the destruction of the camps strikes at the heart of ISWAP’s control structure.
By dismantling its detention system, troops have:
Disrupted ransom and extortion networks
Weakened the group’s grip on local communities
Triggered the release of witnesses whose testimonies may unlock further intelligence
Despite a security environment described as calm but unpredictable, military authorities insist morale remains high and operational momentum intact.
The message from the Timbuktu Triangle is unmistakable: no sanctuary is safe anymore.
As pressure mounts, troops of Operation HADIN KAI say they remain resolute in their mission to deny terrorists safe havens and restore lasting peace across Nigeria’s North East.
