As millions of Nigerians took to the roads for Christmas celebrations, the country’s highway managers found themselves in a battle of endurance one marked by gridlock, long hours and relentless pressure.

At the centre of that effort was the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), whose leadership says the service passed the test.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, has commended officers and men of the Corps for what he described as an exceptional and historic performance during the Christmas travel rush, praising their resilience, professionalism and courage in managing some of the most intense traffic conditions seen this year.

In an address to personnel, the Corps Marshal singled out the clearing of notorious bottlenecks, including the Lokoja axis, a long-standing pressure point for holiday travel, as evidence of strategic coordination and disciplined execution.

Similar interventions, he noted, were recorded across critical corridors nationwide, easing movement at a time of peak vehicular volume.

According to Mohammed, FRSC personnel operated under extreme conditions: extended duty hours, harsh weather, congested highways and heightened public expectations.

Yet, he said, they maintained order, discipline and professionalism attributes he described as proof of the Corps’ growing capacity to protect lives even in the most demanding circumstances.

“Beyond routine duty, they stood firm when Nigerians needed them most,” the Corps Marshal said, adding that the courage and endurance displayed during the festive period reinforced the FRSC’s core mandate of safer roads and seamless mobility.

The Christmas operation, he noted, also reflected deeper institutional gains improved operational efficiency, stronger leadership across commands and better coordination of resources.

Mohammed paid special tribute to officers who stayed on duty while others celebrated with their families, describing their sacrifice as the true hallmark of public service and patriotism.

With New Year travel volumes expected to remain high, the Corps Marshal urged personnel to sustain the momentum, remain vigilant and continue to uphold the values of the Corps.

He reassured Nigerians that the FRSC remains fully mobilised to ensure safe and hitch-free movement on highways nationwide.

The commendation comes at a time when road safety remains a critical public concern, particularly during festive periods prone to crashes and congestion.

For the FRSC, the Christmas operation was not just crowd control, it was a stress test of leadership, planning and national service.

As the festive season rolls into the New Year, the Corps says its message is simple: the highways remain under watch, and the commitment to protecting lives on Nigerian roads is non-negotiable.
