INEC Directs RECs to Submit Plans for Improving Polling Unit Accessibility

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to provide information on their plans to enhance voter access to polling units in their states.

The INEC Chairman who gave the directive in his opening speech at the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) Regular Consultative Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, informed that the is directive aimed to improve electoral service delivery and ensure a smoother voting process.

According to him, the plans may include decongesting polling units, cleaning up the voters’ register, deepening engagement with electoral stakeholders, and managing electoral logistics and security.

The INEC Chairman emphasized that RECs should implement existing policies and procedures without prompting from the headquarters.

Prof Yakubu mentioned that the Commission has announced dates for several elections and electoral activities, including bye-elections, governorship elections, and area council elections.

The INEC Chairman encouraged RECs to intensify their efforts to ensure successful elections.

“The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will resume nationwide, with specific dates for online and in-person registration.

“In Anambra State, the CVR will resume simultaneously in all 326 wards to enable the Commission to compile a new voters’ register before the election.

“The Commission is working on a supplement to the Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections to provide clarity on the review of election results.

“This will be uploaded to the Commission’s website and other platforms for public information once finalized.
