Nigeria’s electoral landscape was rattled on Friday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) debunked a forged document circulating widely across social and political networks one that falsely claimed the electoral body had endorsed a postponement of the Ekiti State Congress and Governorship Primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The fake correspondence, dated November 10, 2025, was purportedly issued and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, on 21 November 2025, allegedly conveying resolutions from a PDP National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.
But INEC has now declared, without ambiguity, that the document is fraudulent and did not originate from any official channel of the Commission.
In a sharply worded statement, INEC revealed that preliminary checks show the signature of the Secretary to the Commission was forged by what it described as “unscrupulous elements” attempting to manipulate the political process and mislead the public.
The Commission warned political actors, media platforms and the general public to disregard the document in its entirety, stressing that its contents are fabricated and carry no electoral authority.
INEC labelled the forgery a serious electoral offence, describing the act as a calculated attempt to sow confusion, disrupt political activities in Ekiti State and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Calling for restraint, the Commission appealed to individuals engaged in such “futile, criminal, and disruptive activities” to desist immediately in the interest of electoral integrity and national peace.
To ensure accountability, INEC confirmed that it is working closely with security agencies to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of the electoral process.
