The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering world-class electoral services, with both staff capacity building and international recognition taking centre stage this week.
From August 12 to 15, 2025, four staff members from INEC’s Voter Education and Publicity Department Gbadegesin Adebare Taiwo (Lagos), Esther Chibuikem (Abuja), Adenike Oriowo (Lagos), and Nelly Edem (Lagos) participated in the International Public Relations Congress at the Peninsula Hotel & Towers, Lagos.
The three-day event, themed “Leveraging Public Relations Best Practice to Rebuild Trust, Deliver Mandate & Promote Peace for Economic Sustainable Development”, was organised by the Business Education Examinations Council (BEEC).
A highlight of the Congress was the presentation of a Certificate of Excellence to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for outstanding leadership in managing complex elections in Nigeria.
The award was endorsed by the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), African Public Relations Association (APRA), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and the Management School London.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Chairman, Alh. Taiwo Gbadegesin, Head of Voter Education, Publicity, Gender, and Civil Society Organisations/PWDs, described it as an “iconic challenge” to continue innovating and engaging stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
The recognition drew commendations from dignitaries, including Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Christopher Bazivamo, for INEC’s efforts in consolidating democracy and ensuring that every vote counts.
In his reaction, Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Ayobami Salami, hailed the empowerment programme as a vital boost for staff development, noting that the award symbolised perseverance and integrity in navigating Nigeria’s complex electoral environment.
INEC reiterated that it remains committed to digitalising the electoral process, deepening stakeholder engagement, and delivering credible elections that inspire public trust.
