Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army have intercepted a suspected arms trafficker in Taraba State, recovering six machine guns and ammunition in what military authorities describe as a decisive intelligence-led operation.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Abubakar Ibrahim from Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, was apprehended on February 12 in Ibi Local Government Area following actionable intelligence.

Acting on credible information, troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Wukari operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke moved swiftly to intercept the suspect.

A thorough search led to the recovery of:

Six PKT machine guns

Two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

₦170,000 in cash

One Peugeot 504 vehicle

One Q Seven mobile phone

Seven bottles and wraps of perfume

Two small containers of Vaseline

Military sources indicated that the assortment of items suggests logistical preparation beyond personal possession, raising concerns about possible distribution networks.

Security analysts note that Taraba and neighbouring states remain vulnerable to arms proliferation due to porous transit routes and lingering communal tensions.

By intercepting the cache, authorities say they have disrupted a potential supply chain that could have armed criminal groups operating across the region.

The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation as security agencies probe possible accomplices and supply routes.

Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, urging sustained operational momentum to meet the mandate assigned by the Chief of Army Staff.

He also acknowledged the role of local residents in providing timely intelligence that enabled the operation’s success reinforcing the growing reliance on community-based information gathering in counter-crime efforts.

“The Brigade remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property, and to restore lasting peace and stability across Taraba State,” he stated.

The interception underscores a broader security recalibration in the Middle Belt, where military formations are increasingly shifting toward proactive intelligence-driven tactics rather than reactive deployments.

With illegal arms proliferation fuelling banditry and communal violence across parts of the region, security agencies appear determined to choke supply channels before weapons reach flashpoints.

For Taraba, the operation marks not just another arrest but a strategic disruption in a shadow market that continues to threaten fragile stability.
