Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign took a decisive international turn this week as the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), working in concert with the United States, carried out precision strike operations against identified foreign ISIS-linked elements operating in parts of North West Nigeria.
The operation, executed with clearance from the appropriate Federal Government authorities, marks a sharp escalation in efforts to disrupt transnational terrorist networks seeking to embed themselves within Nigeria’s security fault lines.
A statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, the Director, Defence Information (DDI), on December 26, 2025 informed that the strikes were intelligence-driven and designed to weaken the operational capacity of the targeted elements without endangering civilian populations.
According to a statement from Defence Headquarters, the strikes followed credible intelligence and extensive planning, reflecting a deliberate strategy to deny foreign fighters safe haven and operational depth within Nigeria’s borders.
The operation forms part of a broader, coordinated counter-terrorism framework that blends domestic military capability with strategic international partnerships.
Security analysts note that the involvement of the United States underscores growing concern about the movement of foreign extremist fighters into West Africa and Nigeria’s determination to prevent the North West from becoming a new theatre for international terror franchises.
The Armed Forces emphasized that the strikes were conducted with precision, prioritising the protection of lives and property while degrading the combat effectiveness of the targeted ISIS-linked elements.
Officials described the action as a clear signal that Nigeria will not tolerate the expansion of foreign-backed terror cells within its territory.
In reaffirming its position, the military said it remains fully committed to joint and inter-agency operations aimed at restoring stability across the country.
The statement added that collaboration with trusted partners will continue to play a key role in confronting evolving security threats, particularly those with cross-border dimensions.
The latest operation reinforces Abuja’s message that the fight against terrorism is no longer confined to local criminality but increasingly intersects with global security dynamics—requiring both decisive force and strategic alliances.
