In a groundbreaking move to tackle rising global insecurity and media distortion, the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) held its inaugural Diplomatic/Security International Conference on Tuesday at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.

The high-level event brought together ambassadors, policymakers, media executives, and international stakeholders under the theme: “Combatting Global Security Challenges in an Era of Misinformation, Disinformation, and Misperceptions.”

Addressing the gathering, DICAN Chairman Mr. Fredrick Idehai described the conference as a bold and historic step toward promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development through responsible diplomatic journalism.

“Today’s gathering is not just historic for Nigeria, but for the entire journalism and diplomatic community worldwide,” Idehai stated. “DICAN is now the first journalist beat association globally to unite international stakeholders in confronting both security threats and media-driven distortions.”

Held under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event aligns with Nigeria’s “4Ds” foreign policy strategy—Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora Engagement—championed by Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

Mr. Idehai expressed gratitude to the Ministry, its Permanent Secretary, and other institutional partners for their unwavering support in bringing the conference to life. “The journey to this moment was challenging,” he noted, “but driven by a deep belief in the power of information and diplomacy to change the world.”

A major highlight of the conference was the presentation of Merit-Based Excellence Awards to individuals and institutions recognized for their exceptional contributions to peace, security, and global cooperation.

“These awards are not just for recognition—they are a call to action,” Idehai emphasized. “We must all redouble our efforts in promoting a safer, more connected world.”

The Chairman also used the platform to announce DICAN’s next major event—the Diplomatic/Trade, Investment, and Business Networking Conference & Exhibition, scheduled for October 28–29, 2025. The forthcoming event aims to bolster international trade ties while showcasing Nigeria’s investment and tourism potential.

Throughout the conference, DICAN reiterated its commitment to using journalism as a tool for shaping policy, enhancing global collaboration, and strengthening international relations. The association urged embassies and global partners to expand cooperation with journalists through information exchange, training, and joint programming.

“We are open to stronger partnerships with your missions,” Idehai said, “especially in fostering transparency, mutual understanding, and capacity building.”

The event concluded with a solemn minute of silence in memory of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari and others around the world who have lost their lives to insecurity.

By convening this global dialogue, DICAN has reinforced its role not just as a media body, but as a diplomatic bridge-builder—demonstrating how responsible journalism can influence policy, advance peace, and foster lasting international understanding.
