Maritime Union Endorses Nigeria’s IMO Council Bid, Cites NIMASA’s Successes

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has thrown its weight behind Nigeria’s bid to return to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, praising the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for its outstanding work in maritime security and governance.

MWUN President General, Comrade Francis Bunu who disclosed this in a press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday by Osagie Edward, the Head, Public Relations NIMASA commended NIMASA’s efforts in combating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that the agency’s work has improved safety and stability on Nigerian waters, boosted regional stability, and enhanced investor confidence.

Bunu pledged that MWUN would mobilize international support for Nigeria’s IMO Council bid, emphasizing that the country has the expertise and leadership to make meaningful contributions to global maritime affairs.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, saying it would unlock investment opportunities and create jobs in the maritime sector.

The MWUN leader reaffirmed the union’s commitment to collaboration and industrial harmony, particularly in the dock labor sub-sector.

He also emphasized the importance of sustainable ocean governance and the critical role of seafarers in global trade, advocating for seafarers’ rights, decent work conditions, and responsible stewardship of ocean resources.
