The Nigerian Navy has effected a key change in its top communication structure with the appointment of Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information, a move seen as part of efforts to strengthen public engagement and strategic messaging of the Service.

The appointment, approved by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, was disclosed in Abuja on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral A.O. Olodude.

According to the statement, Captain Folorunsho formally assumed office on January 27, 2026, taking over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT.

Rear Admiral Olodude described the new Navy spokesperson as a seasoned officer with a blend of academic depth, operational exposure and professional competence, noting that his profile fits the Service’s growing need for effective information management in a dynamic security environment.

“Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho possesses extensive academic, operational and professional credentials,” Olodude said.

He disclosed that the officer has undergone advanced military and professional training both locally and internationally, including courses in Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden and the United States, equipping him with broad perspectives on defence communication and naval operations.

The Navy said Folorunsho’s career has spanned several critical operational and strategic appointments, with postings on board naval ships as well as in major formations and headquarters, giving him firsthand understanding of the Service’s missions and challenges.

Beyond his operational background, Olodude noted that the new Director of Naval Information brings strong public relations and editorial experience to the position, a factor expected to sharpen the Navy’s engagement with the media and the public.

“His background in editorial work and public engagement will significantly enhance the Navy’s information management and strategic communication,” he added.

The change comes at a time when the Nigerian Navy continues to expand its roles in maritime security, anti-piracy operations and regional cooperation, making effective communication increasingly critical.

With Folorunsho now at the helm of the Navy’s information directorate, the Service is expected to project a clearer, more coordinated narrative of its operations, reforms and contributions to national security, in line with the broader objectives of the Defence Headquarters.

The Navy expressed confidence that the new spokesperson would build on existing structures while injecting professionalism and clarity into its public communications.
