The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) is set to implement effective policies aimed at facilitating constructive dialogue on migration, map out sustainable strategies for migration activities as well as promote resilient migration governance in Nigeria.
These were the high points contained in a speech read by Haj. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Honorable National Commissioner for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons at the Commission’s Annex Office, on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
The Press Briefing was on the occasion of the commemoration of this year’s National Migration Dialogue with the theme: “Human Mobility in the context of sustainable National Development”
The programme will kick off at the International Conference Center, Abuja, from December 16-17, 2021.
Addressing the press, the honourable National Commissioner pointed out that this year’s celebration was a departure from the past in the sense that the Commission is partnering with Civil Societies Organization Network for Migration Development (CSOnetMADE) with the support of IOM and other International Partners.
“Civil Society Organizations as you are all aware are key partners in the Nigerian Migration governance structure because of the role they play particularly at the grassroots and support for policy formulation and implementation”, She remarked.
She revealed that this year’s programme will witness the participation of Internal Migration partners, government dignitaries, selected members of the organized private sector, state Actors and no fewer than 90 Civil Society Organizations as well as the more than 500 people expected to join online in Nigeria and beyond.
Speaking further, Haj. Imaan explained that Migration governance in Nigeria has seen continuous improvement since the expansion of the Commission’s mandate vis presidential directives to include coordination of all migration-related matters in the country as well as the resettlement of IDP’s in the nation.
“We are currently on the verge of reviewing the Migration Policy first launched in 2015 along with its 2019-203 Plan of Action”, she stated.
Haj. Imaan reeled out a number of successes recorded by the Commission due to various government interventions and programmes aimed at providing IDP’s Refugees and Migrants with durable solutions which consist of the best tools to enable them to become self-reliant.
One of them is to provide training and life skills to persons of concern across the nation; others are Projects Skill-Up, Reliance as well as GoDigital, all in partnership with I.Create, Central Bank of Nigeria, Innoson motors and the National Information Technology Development Agency.
On the issue of stranded Nigerians, she disclosed that the Commission has successfully carried out repatriation and reintegration of such persons from Libya and other countries over the years. ‘We have facilitated the safe return to Nigeria refugees with the desire to return and presently seeking asylum in Cameroun, Chad and the Niger Republic”, she announced.
According to her the overall goal of the Commission is to strengthen the Institutional framework for the realization of the rights, dignity and well-being of vulnerable persons through the mitigation of impact and achievement of durable solutions to internal displacements in Nigeria.
