The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to deepen its strategic security presence in Nigeria’s South-South region following the donation of land by the Akwa Ibom State Government for the establishment of a Forward Operational Base (FOB) in the state.
During a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Bassey Eno in Uyo on Wednesday, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, hailed the move as a significant step toward enhancing national defence infrastructure and maritime security along the Gulf of Guinea corridor.
Air Marshal Abubakar described the donation as a “pivotal gesture” that will accelerate the development of critical military infrastructure and boost regional stability.
He noted that the new FOB will strengthen Nigeria’s air power capabilities while simultaneously supporting commercial activity, tourism, and investor confidence across Akwa Ibom and surrounding coastal states.
“The establishment of this Forward Operational Base will provide assurance of safety and security, entrenching Akwa Ibom as an attractive destination for investment and tourism. This partnership is about more than air operations; it’s about building a secure, resilient, and prosperous future for Nigeria” CAS stated.
CAS also emphasized the Nigerian Air Force’s readiness to reinforce existing security efforts in the region, where maritime threats and cross-border crimes remain a persistent concern.
Governor Eno, in his response, welcomed the CAS and reiterated the state’s commitment to national security, describing the land donation as part of Akwa Ibom’s broader contribution to peace and development in Nigeria.
“Security is the bedrock of any thriving society. We are proud to support the Nigerian Air Force in this critical endeavour,” the Governor said.
As part of his visit, Air Marshal Abubakar also met with traditional leaders, including the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia (Attah Ekid Afid).
The CAS commended the traditional institution for its continued cooperation with security agencies and stressed the importance of community support in sustaining peace and order.
Obong Edidem Abia praised the NAF’s growing presence in the region and pledged ongoing support from traditional institutions to foster peace, development, and national unity.
The visit marks a new chapter in the partnership between the Nigerian Air Force and Akwa Ibom State, aimed at bolstering operational readiness, securing the Gulf of Guinea, and promoting intergovernmental collaboration for national growth.
