Nigeria and Cuba have taken a step toward strengthening their diplomatic relations with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening cooperation across various sectors.
The agreement was formalized during a high-level meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Monday in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Amb. Tuggar emphasized the longstanding historical and cultural connections between the two nations.
He noted that Cuba holds a special place in Nigeria’s diplomatic history, citing historical interactions dating back to the colonial era.
The Minister also highlighted the shared cultural heritage, particularly among the Yoruba and Itsekiri ethnic groups, which have influenced Cuban traditions, music, and religious practices.
“Cuba played a significant role in the liberation of African nations from colonial rule and apartheid regimes, much like Nigeria did during the struggle for independence across the continent,” Tuggar stated.
On his part, Minister Rodríguez reaffirmed Cuba’s deep-rooted ties with Africa, particularly Nigeria.
He acknowledged the African heritage embedded in Cuban society and expressed appreciation for the contributions of African descendants to Cuba’s independence, economic development, and cultural identity.
“When you say Cuba, you are also saying Africa,” Rodríguez said. “We recognize the immense contribution of African descendants to Cuba’s growth and history.”Nigeria, Cuba Deepen Cooperation Across Key Sectors with Landmark MoU
