Nigeria has drawn a bold diplomatic line across history and the present, saluting Haiti as a symbol of Black freedom while pledging deeper engagement with the Caribbean nation at a defining moment in its journey.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the spokesperson in Abuja on Wednesday congratulated the Republic of Haiti on the celebration of its 221st Independence Anniversary, describing the milestone as far more than a ceremonial date on the global calendar.

According to the Spokesperson, the MFA Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, extended warm congratulations to Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, as well as to the government and people of Haiti, paying tribute to a nation whose independence altered the course of world history.

According to Nigeria, Haiti’s 1804 victory over colonial rule remains a defining moment in the global struggle for freedom and human dignity.

As the first Black republic to attain independence, Haiti’s success shattered the myth of racial inferiority and ignited liberation movements across Africa and the wider African diaspora.

The statement described Haiti’s independence as a continuing source of inspiration for oppressed peoples worldwide, noting that its legacy transcends borders, generations and continents.

Nigeria used the anniversary to reaffirm its solidarity with the Haitian people, particularly as the country confronts complex contemporary challenges.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry underscored the importance of unity, resilience and inclusive governance as essential pillars for Haiti’s quest for peace, stability and sustainable development.

The statement also highlighted the deep historical and cultural bonds linking Nigeria and Haiti, rooted in shared ancestry, common heritage and enduring values.

Nigeria pledged to strengthen bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic engagement, cultural exchange and cooperation within multilateral platforms such as the United Nations.

According to the Ministry, collaboration at international forums remains critical to advancing global peace, development and collective security, particularly for nations with shared historical experiences.

As Haiti marks more than two centuries of sovereignty, Nigeria expressed hope for the country’s enduring peace, economic recovery and collective prosperity, framing the anniversary as both a moment of remembrance and a call to renewal.

The message positions Nigeria not just as a congratulatory partner, but as a historical ally reaffirming a shared legacy of resistance, resilience and aspiration.

At 221, Haiti’s independence, Nigeria suggests, is not merely a past triumph, it remains a living testament to what is possible when freedom is claimed, defended and reimagined for a new generation.
