Nigeria has moved to recalibrate and deepen its strategic relationship with Türkiye, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, held high-level bilateral talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara, days ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anticipated State visit.

The meeting, Tuggar’s first official engagement in Türkiye since assuming office, signalled Abuja’s intent to translate diplomatic goodwill into concrete economic, security and institutional gains.

It comes at a time when Nigeria is aggressively repositioning its foreign policy to support domestic reforms, attract investment and expand strategic alliances beyond traditional partners.

At the talks, both ministers undertook a comprehensive review of Nigeria–Türkiye relations, focusing on strengthening cooperation across political dialogue, trade and investment, security collaboration and multilateral engagement.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan commended Nigeria’s stabilising influence in West Africa, describing the country as a critical anchor for regional peace, security and economic integration.

He noted Nigeria’s leadership role within ECOWAS and broader continental frameworks, adding that Ankara views Abuja as a strategic partner in Africa’s evolving geopolitical and economic landscape.

Ambassador Tuggar used the engagement to press for expanded bilateral trade and increased Turkish investment in Nigeria, particularly in high-impact sectors such as construction, manufacturing, energy and large-scale infrastructure areas where Turkish firms already have a growing footprint.

Both sides acknowledged that while economic relations between the two countries have grown steadily in recent years, significant untapped potential remains.

They agreed that deeper public–private sector engagement, supported by clearer investment frameworks and institutional cooperation, would be critical to unlocking new opportunities.

According to diplomatic sources, the discussions also explored mechanisms to de-risk investments, strengthen business-to-business partnerships and align Nigeria’s reform agenda with Türkiye’s industrial and export-driven expertise.

Beyond economics, security featured prominently on the agenda, with both ministers identifying opportunities to deepen cooperation in military affairs and the defence industry.

This aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernise its security architecture and diversify international defence partnerships amid evolving security challenges at home and across the Sahel.

The Ankara engagement underscores the increasingly strategic character of Nigeria–Türkiye relations, anchored on shared positions around sovereignty, pragmatic diplomacy and institutional collaboration.

As preparations intensify for President Tinubu’s State visit, Monday’s talks are widely seen as laying the diplomatic and economic groundwork for a new phase of engagement one expected to deliver tangible outcomes in trade flows, investment commitments and security cooperation.

For Abuja, the message is clear: Nigeria is leveraging diplomacy as an economic tool, and Türkiye is emerging as a key partner in its renewed push for growth, stability and global relevance.
