Nigerian Police Contributes to Violations of Human Rights, says Legal Practitioner

The Nigerian Police Force has been accused of contributing to the violation of human rights in Nigeria through molestation, beating and extortion of accused persons.

A Legal Practitioner and Human Rights Activist, Barrister Alzubayr Abubakar who made the accusation during a sensitization exercise organized by the Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR)  in Kaduna  Monday lamented that dealing in such a manner are not inconsistence with the Nigerian laws.

He opined that the Police must be enlightened about the implication of the violation of the human rights, saying the attitude of the police violating human rights has put Nigeria in a bad light especially among the committee of nations.

“Violation of human rights is not acceptable to us, not acceptable to the constitution, and not even acceptable to the judicial system of Nigeria.

“We are against the brutality and the attitude of the police by not respecting the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Barrister Abubakar however recommended that the Nigerian Constitution should be made available in 50 major languages for accessibility.

Earlier, the State Chairman of Committee for Defence of Human Rights, Comrade Kabir Ibrahim said the aim of the gathering is to sensitize the members on issues relating to protection of human rights especially in Kaduna.

“In this meeting today, we are going to induct new members and provide Identity Cards for them, and as well orientating them on how to continue to have their voices on the issue relating to human rights in their various localities.

“After issuance of these Identity Cards to our members, and thereafter anyone found in any of indiscipline or in an that is capable of tarnishing the image of this organization shall be dealt with according to the constitution of the organization ”, he explained.

Comrade Kabir reiterated the commitment of CDHR towards ensuring that before, during and after the forthcoming Local Government Election which scheduled for May 12, 2018, that no human rights is violated either by the politicians or the security agencies.

Reading the progress reports of CDHR at the floor of the meeting, the Kaduna State Secretary, Comrade Ali Attahiru says: “on the 24th of April, 2016 CDHR Legal Team intervened in a criminal matter before the Chief Magistrate Court (11) NDA Kaduna between Mallam Aliyu Dauda vs Hajia Safiya Garba, a widow with six children, who unlawfully sold the widow’s landed property.

“We were able to recover the entitlement in monetary terms, the sum of Two Million Nine Hundred Thousand Naira.

“On the 19th of October, 2017 CDHR legal team intervened in a matter involving gross violation of fundamental right of one El-Yakubu Ajuji vs the Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State and a petition has been tendered to the Chief Judge of Kaduna State” he stressed.

According to him, Comrade Attahiru explained that CDHR has intervened in so many cases relating to violation of human rights in Kaduna State.
