Nigeria’s military diplomacy took centre stage on Tuesday as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, arrived in the Republic of Liberia on a high-profile official engagement to participate in the country’s 69th Armed Forces Day Celebration, scheduled for Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
Invited by the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), the Nigerian Army Chief’s presence signalled deepening defence ties between both nations and reaffirmed Nigeria’s historic role as a stabilising force in West Africa’s security architecture.
Lieutenant General Shaibu was received with full military honours by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Forley, moments after touching down in Monrovia.
In a powerful display of mutual respect and enduring professional bonds, the Nigerian Army Chief inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the AFL, a ceremonial gesture that underscored the esteem Liberia holds for Nigeria’s military leadership.
The reception set the tone for a visit rich in symbolism, history and strategic intent.
Beyond the parade ground, the COAS proceeded to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Liberia, where he was welcomed by the Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Rahmat Muhammad.
During interactions with embassy officials, Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the mission’s role in strengthening Nigeria–Liberia bilateral relations and protecting the interests of Nigerians resident in the country.
Military sources described the visit as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to defence diplomacy, regional security cooperation and professional military solidarity within the West African sub-region, particularly at a time when cross-border security threats demand coordinated responses.
Lieutenant General Shaibu is expected to deliver a key address at the 69th Armed Forces Day celebration, as Liberia reflects on its military heritage, operational milestones and the Armed Forces’ contribution to national stability and development.
His address is anticipated to highlight shared security challenges, collective responsibility and the enduring value of regional cooperation.
The visit carries personal significance for the Nigerian Army Chief. Lieutenant General Shaibu previously served as Military Assistant to a former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, a role through which he contributed directly to the strengthening of Liberia’s defence institutions.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, one of Liberia’s highest military honours a rare accolade that further cements his legacy within the AFL.
As Liberia marks nearly seven decades of military service, Nigeria’s Army Chief stands not only as a guest, but as a trusted partner, a symbol of shared history, and a reminder of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to peace, professionalism and collective security across Africa.
