Nigeria’s Growth Hinges on Increased Investment in Science and Technology – Sen Abbas

Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, has emphasized the need for increased budgetary allocation to science and technology in Nigeria’s education system.

According to Senator Abbas who disclosed this during an interview with journalists shortly after plenary at the National Assembly, Abuja on Tuesday affirmed that ₦100 billion budget for science and technology would not be enough to drive meaningful progress in the sector.

The Lawmaker stressed that scientific research and development are crucial for Nigeria’s economic transformation and growth.

He expressed concern over the country’s poor funding of research and development, noting that the current allocation of less than ₦100 billion is insufficient to address the nation’s innovation and infrastructure gaps.

The Senator cited global examples, such as the use of stealth aircraft in military operations, to illustrate the power of science and technology in driving progress.

Senator Abbas called for improved budgetary provisions to support science and technology, advocating for a significant increase in funding for the sector.

“There will be no appreciable growth in the economy if we fail to channel efforts into funding research and development.” Sen Abbas.

According to him, increase investment in science and technology is essential for Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

He also mentioned that adequate funding for science and technology will enable Nigeria to address its innovation and infrastructure gaps, driving progress and competitiveness.

On the PDP political crisis, the Senator expressed unwavering support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), downplaying recent internal conflicts as “family affairs” that have now been settled.

He informed that he is happy with the party’s decisions and believes Nigeria was better under PDP’s leadership.

Senator Abbas expressed confidence in the party’s ability to contest and win the 2027 elections, stating that PDP will “do its best” to align with Nigerians’ wishes and prayers.

The Lawmaker remained unfazed about recent defections, saying PDP is well-known across the country and has done well in Adamawa State.

Recall that the PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday resolved the disputes, and the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, announced the affirmation of Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary.
