In a forceful signal of escalating pressure on terrorists and criminal networks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has declared an unbreakable alliance between the Nigerian Army and the Taraba State Government, unveiling a renewed, all-out offensive to flush out insecurity from the state and its surrounding corridors.

The declaration was made on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, when Taraba State Governor, Colonel Agbu Kefas (rtd), led a high-powered delegation, including federal lawmakers and members of the Executive Council of the International Institute for African Ispense Security and Governance, on a courtesy visit to the Army Chief.

Addressing the delegation, Lieutenant General Shaibu reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to discharge its constitutional mandate of supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and internal security, stressing that Taraba occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s security architecture due to its terrain, borders and evolving threat dynamics.

The COAS commended Governor Kefas for what he described as decisive leadership and effective coordination with security agencies, noting that the state government’s tangible support particularly the donation of land and provision of operational equipment has served as critical force multipliers, significantly boosting the tempo, reach and effectiveness of military operations in the state.

He stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved by firepower alone, underscoring the importance of strong civil-military collaboration.

In that context, the Army chief appealed for sustained partnership, specifically calling for stable electricity supply to key military formations, including the 20 Model Battalion, Sarti, and 23 Battalion, saying improved power would directly enhance combat readiness, operational efficiency and troop welfare.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also turned the spotlight on the role of the public, urging intensified community sensitisation across Taraba State and calling on residents to support ongoing operations with timely and credible intelligence.

“Community cooperation remains a decisive weapon in defeating terrorists and other criminal elements,” he said.

In his response, Governor Kefas described the visit as a clear demonstration of Taraba State’s unwavering solidarity with the Nigerian Army.

He congratulated the COAS on his appointment and praised the professionalism, resilience and sacrifices of troops deployed in the state, noting that their sustained presence has produced visible and measurable improvements in the security landscape.

The Governor also applauded the growing inter-agency synergy among security forces operating in Taraba, while highlighting areas that require reinforced military deployment.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening support for the Army, including assistance with accommodation for deployed personnel.

As both sides closed ranks, the message was unmistakable: Taraba will not be ceded to terror, and the Army-state partnership will remain a steel-hard front against all forms of insecurity.
