History was made at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council as the Grace Ike-led executive facilitated a life-changing free eye surgery for the Council’s former Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja.
The surgery, performed on August 28, 2025, ended Sule’s seven-year battle with deteriorating vision, restoring his sight and reigniting hope.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the Veteran journalist praised the Council’s leadership for their compassion and foresight.
“By December 22, it would have been seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council,” Sule declared, offering prayers for Grace Ike and her team.
True to her campaign pledge to prioritize journalists’ welfare, Chairman Grace Ike has also secured free eye surgeries for two other members, Nicholas Ngozichukwu of NAN and Kamoru Odunlami of ITV, following successful medical assessments.
Others screened but not yet eligible for surgery received medication and follow-up care.
The initiative, the first of its kind in years, has positioned the NUJ-FCT leadership as a beacon of humane service, putting health and welfare at the center of unionism.
Beneficiaries and colleagues alike hailed the programme as a groundbreaking intervention that underscores Grace Ike’s commitment to a healthier media community in the capital.
