The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has firmly distanced itself from a planned protest allegedly being mobilized by a self-styled group of “Concerned Staff” within the National Assembly, warning its members to steer clear of any unauthorized demonstration that could disrupt legislative activities.
In a strongly worded press statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Sunday Sabiyyi, PASAN declared that the union had no hand in the purported protest, describing it as an unauthorized action circulated on a WhatsApp platform known as “NASS FORUM.”
“We strongly advise all PASAN members to remain at their duty posts and go about their legitimate business within the complex,” Sabiyyi said. “We do not support or condone any protest or picketing that disrupts the functioning of the National Assembly.”
The group behind the proposed protest reportedly claimed that several staff issues remained unresolved.
However, PASAN countered that most of the concerns had already been addressed by the National Assembly management, with a joint committee currently working on the few remaining grey areas.
Reaffirming its position, the union emphasized that it remains committed to dialogue, not disruption, as the path to resolving staff-related challenges.
It also urged the National Assembly management to investigate the origins of the planned protest and to take necessary measures to maintain order within the complex.
PASAN further appealed for calm among its members, insisting that professionalism, discipline, and decorum must be upheld at all times to protect the integrity of the legislature.
“The image of the National Assembly must not be dragged into avoidable controversy,” Sabiyyi added. “Our approach remains constructive engagement with management for the benefit of all staff.”
The union reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting the welfare of its members through legitimate processes, while cautioning against any attempt by external or internal actors to sow division or chaos within the workforce.
