The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports of registering two new political parties in Nigeria, specifically the Independent Democrats (ID) and the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).
In a press statement on its X Handle, INEC clarified that these parties were actually deregistered in February 2020 for failing to meet constitutional requirements, including poor performance in elections and non-compliance with party registration guidelines.
In its Key Points, INEC emphasized that no new parties have been registered, and the total number of registered parties remains 19.
– Former Registration: Both ID and PDM were originally registered in August 2013 but lost their registration status in 2020.
– Importance of Verification: INEC urged the public, media, and political stakeholders to verify information through credible sources before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation.
– Commitment to Transparency: The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in managing Nigeria’s electoral process.
INEC’s clarification aimed to dispel confusion and misinformation circulating on social media about political party registrations ahead of future elections.
Citizens are advised to follow official INEC channels for accurate updates.
