Power: 40MVA, 60MVA Mobile Transformers Substations Commission by Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has commissioned two Power Transformers to replace faulty onces in the system and increase capacity of some substations by upgrading and reinforcement throughout the country.

Speaking at the commissioning of 40 Merger Volt Amphere (MVA) 132/33 Kilo-Volt (KV) Mobile Power Transformer at Zaria, Kaduna State and 60MVA 132/33 KV Power Transformer at the Funtua Transmission Substation, Katsina State on Friday said the  transformers has been increase to 97.5 capacity which is more than 200% increase.

Represented by the Minister of State for Power, Alhaji Mustapha Baba Shehuri, Mr. Fashola said the commissioning could not come at a better time taking into consideration the increase in generation to more than 7000MW and the Federal Government to reach 20,000 MW in the next four years through the going Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programm.

According to the Minister, power generation is one of the priorities of the government since assumption of office and has been working tirelessly.

Mr. Fashola informed that the installation of new power transformers to these states was as a part of the effort made by the present government to ameliorate the challenges encountered in generation and distribution of power supply across the country.

“We have made a lot of improvement in the area of generation and as of today, Nigeria is generating over 7,000 MW”.

“But we fall behind in willing that generation to the DICOS because we lack the transmission capacity and that is why we are working on improving”.

“This particular mobile substation is one out of the six 40MVA mobile substations that my Ministry empowered Transmission Company of Nigeria, (TCN) to procure for urgent deployment to overloaded Transmission substation nationwide and was brought to Zaria for immediate installation and commissioning to ameliorate the precarious suppressed load challenge in the substation”.

“My Ministry as well empowered TCN to procure and install 60MVA power transformers to replace faulty ones in the system”.

“The ongoing upgrade and reinforcement of the generating stations will increase the capacity of substations to distribute energy throughout the country” he stressed.

Mr. Fashola urged the people of Zaria and Funtua to utilize the opportunity of improved and quality power supply for their social, commercial and industrial advancement while commending the effort of TCN management and engineers for successful completion and energizing of the two power transformers.

Also speaking, the Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari informed that the transformer has been redundant in the state for over 7 years and has not been completed but commanded the Minister for his hard work.

Represented by Engineer Mansuri Musa, the Governor said the transformer will go a long way in helping in boosting the economic activities of the people of Kastina State but reminded the Minister that one is down remaining about 10 more transformers that have not been working.

In his remark, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idirs commended the new installation of addition transformer to help boost electricity for Zaria people, saying some many schools, institutions, companies and home has not been enjoying light for long time but with the new development, lack of power will be a time of past in Zaria city.

Earlier, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Interim Managing Direction, Alhaji Usman Gur Mohammad stressed that due to inadequacy which explain the need to expand transmission and grid to many locations in Kaduna and substations.

According to him, this is in line with strategy of the Government in increasement power aimed at providing adequate supply of electricity to Nigerians for sustainable growth in line with international standard.
